Ever since Bhutan opened its door to outside world, there were lots of tourists visiting the country to experience the Bhutanese life style as well as to explore the unexplored places. Even after a decade of opening its border for the tourists, there are still some parts of the country left unexplored. We are here for you to explore the places that are least visited by the tourists. So the team Druk Deothjung welcomes you to eastern part of the country Bhutan where you will experience a completely different and unique culture & traditions from the places that you might have visited. Druk Deothjung Resort has arranged 6 days tour for our visitors solely focused on the Eastern part of Bhutan.

DAY 01 – SAMDRUP JONGKHAR TO TRASHIGANG (6 HRS DRIVE)

Travel to the east through Samdrup Jongkhar where our team will complete the entry and exit permits at the immigration for you to have a good trip ahead. After that our guide and driver will receive you at the border gate with a khadhar (white scarf). Then, we will drive through the sub-tropical forest with amazing view of villages settled in the valleys along with some settlements along the highway. After driving for almost a day, we will check in at Druk Deothjung Resort which is situated at the hill top with mesmerizing view of Trashigang Dzong to the right and Drangme Chhu River to the left.

DAY 02 –  MERAK/SAKTENG (4HRS DRIVE)

Merak & sakteng are two different villages for the nomadic people. It is located at 3500m and 4000m above the sea level respectively. As per the local government’s demography, Merak is a home to around 213 households and sakteng has 330 households. No other cereals or crops can be grown in such high altitude except for bitter buckwheat and some vegetables. Since the village is untouched by the development you can enjoy pure nomadic life. Yak herders who live in the Merak-Sakteng region are seminomadic, and they have a distinctive and fascinating culture. They have their own deities, an own dialect and way of clothing. The Himalayan bear, Himalayan red fox, endangered snow leopard, and red panda can all be found at Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, which is also the home of the mythical yeti. You will find a fantastic view of Radhi village and Rangjung Woesel Choling Monastery on your way. You will drive back to hotel afterward.

DAY 03 – TRASHIYANGTSE (2 HRS DRIVE FROM HOTEL)

This valley is located at an elevation of 1830m above sea level and it is also a home to Black Necked crane especially at Bumdelling which is around 30- 40 mins drive from the main town. It is also famous for Chorten Kora stupa which resembles the famous stupa in Nepal. It was built by Lam Ngawang Chogyel in 1740 to subdue a demon and furthermore some legends say that a young girl from Arunachal Pradesh, India was buried in alive. You can also visit Zorig Chusum(School of 13 Arts & Crafts) where students are taught crafting, painting, carpentry etc. On a way back to hotel you can visit Gomphu Kora which is famous fir its festival held in 2nd lunar month. The temple is said to be the meditating cave for Guru Rinpoche.

DAY 04 – LHUNTSE (5-6 HRS DRIVE)

Drive along the Drangme Chhu River to Lhuntse where you will pass through Mongar Dzongkhag which is quite famous for lemon grass products. After having lunch at Mongar and exploring around the town, you will continue the journey to your next destination, Lhuntse. Since its 75 km away from Mongar, it will take around 2 hrs to reach your destination. You will directly visit the world’s largest Guru Statue at Takila. The statue stands the height of 173 feet on the Takila mountain slope overlooking the entire valley of Tangmachu. It was built in 2008 and was completed in 2015 under the supervision of late Khenpo Karpo Rinpochen. Towards the evening, you will check in at home stay at Khoma and have a dinner there.

DAY 05 – EXPLORE KHOMA VILLAGE

On 5th day of the tour, you will explore around Khoma village which known for its weaving culture in the country. Winter is great season for the people in this village as all ages of children after the school bring themselves together to learn old tradition of weaving Kushu-thara. Weaving is not just their culture but the main source of income. Before you drive back to Trashigang, you will visit Gangzung village, popularly known for its pottery.

DAY 06 – TRASHIGANG – SAMDRUPJONGKHAR

After a brief visit to Trashigang Dzong in the morning,  you will proceed back to Samdrup Jongkhar. Druk Deothjung team will complete entry and exit permits at immigration.
